Description
Wednesdays were our days together. Mom and I did something every Wednesday for many, many years. We would shop. We would go on drives, but what we did most was go to the movies… always bargain matinees. Typically it was the first showing of the day. We would sneak our lunch inside. Yes, I know… we are supposed to buy the popcorn and candy there, but we were too thrifty for that! Once in a while we would treat ourselves to a small bag of popcorn and that was always special. I remember one time in particular that we went to a movie at a different theater than usual. For whatever reason, we both felt like corn dogs for lunch, but the show was starting very soon. We bought them at Hot Dog on a Stick at the food court nearby and then I stuffed them into my purse and in we went. I’m sure that we must have smelled suspicious, but they were obviously a memorable treat.
Another special memory of bargain matinees is that we would have a girl’s day out for our birthdays. Mom, Julie (older sister), Betsy (younger sister), and Jamie (Betsy’s daughter) all gathered together to celebrate our birthdays. I was always the driver so you don’t see me in these pictures. Usually we chose the showing that was the earliest in the day. We would all sneak in goodies. Each person brought treats for the others. We would watch the movie while we snacked on the goodies and then we would go to lunch where we always treated the birthday girl. She opened all of her gifts and the day was full of laughter and fun.
We continue this tradition to this day. It is always fun and I don’t think there is a time when we are together that we don’t mention Mom. We were a lucky bunch to have had her in our life.
