Description
This protective arm sleeve PDF pattern is designed to protect your arms all year long! If you’re a gardener, these sleeves will protect your arms from all the pointy hazards hiding among your flowers. When the weather gets cold, make yourself a cozy fleece version to wear on all your outdoor adventures. You can also make these to protect sensitive skin. I have made several pairs of these for my Mom to protect her arms when she’s wearing short sleeved tops and dresses.
Instead of putting the thumbhole in the seam of the sleeve, there is a circle shaped opening that’s positioned opposite of underarm seam. Use your sewing machine to create the thumbhole by finishing the edge with a facing. Alternatively, you can use a 3-Thread Narrow to finish the inside of the circular thumbhole opening. (I played with different shaped facings. See the gallery for heart shaped thumbhole facings.) Then use your sewing machine or serger to construct your sleeves. The 3-Thread Flatlock stitch is a perfect choice to sew the underarm seam because the seam allowances slide flat for comfort.
If you’re making these sleeves for protection against the elements, put the seam allowances inside the sleeve. If you’re making them to protect delicate skin, put the seam allowances on the right side of the sleeve so they don’t irritate.
This pattern is available in three sizes: Sm/Med (Finished Bicep = 10 3/4″), Lg (Finished Bicep = 11 1/2″), Xl (Finished Bicep = 12 1/4″) Use fabric that has at least 25% stretch. Test the fit of your sleeve before you hem the ends.
