I designed the Happy Pants Pattern earlier this year and I had the opportunity to work with it at a 3-day Pants Fitting Workshop with the Kansas City ASG.   I arrived at this workshop confident that I had designed the perfect pants pattern.  …And, it was pretty good.   There were 22 ladies in the class, and as we worked on fine tuning the fit of their pants muslins, there were a couple adjustments that I found very “popular”.   Among them was extra ease on the back leg.   (I found this interesting because when I tested the pattern on me and a couple friends, I had to add ease along the side and inseams.   Based on that, I was so sure that students would need more leg room, I left the side and inseams open through the thigh when I sewed up the fit muslins.)

Based on my experience with the Happy Pants at this workshop, I decided to rework it.  The first thing I did was remove some of the width of the back leg.   I also updated my fitting techniques.   I’ve been teaching jeans fitting for almost 10 year now.  With every class I teach, I’ve learned new things.   The trick is to get this information on paper to create easy to follow  instructions.

Great fitting pants depend on the length and shape of the crotch.   This is where I’m focusing on making the Happy Pants easy to work with.   It’s very popular in pants fitting to look at the actual shape of the crotch.   This is tricky because your body shape looks different on flat paper.  And, the flat pattern  shape changes when you sew it in fabric.  Instead of looking at the front and back crotch seams as a whole, I’ve broken them down into two sections that affect the fit of your pants very differently.

Phewww… It’s been a process, but I’m excited to share it with you!    If you’re interested in joining me, details will be posted in JSD Fitting and Pattern Perfection in the next couple of days 🙂
